WordPress for Designers: Day 3
Moving right along into day three of our Wordpress for Designers series; today we will start creating our own theme from scratch. We will have a close look at how exactly to go about setting up your themes stylesheet and information, as well as creating the index.php page. In addition, we will examine wordpress template tags, what they are, and how to use them properly.

thanks for another great video.. looking forward for the rest of the series
Awesome series… I love how you are starting completely from scratch with the theme, I didn’t realize WordPress was this flexible. It always bothered me that themes typically have a header file that opens the tag and a footer file that closes it. Just seems wrong, especially coming from an ASP.NET background… now I know it’s just a matter of personal preference when designing your theme.
Loving these screencasts!
Please keep up the great work!
Thanks for day 3! Always nice to see exactly what you can do from the top of the coding to the bottom. Can’t wait for day 4!
i was waiting for day 3 ,
suggestion, can you make those videos 2 days after one, i mean make the next post on Friday

@Drew Thanks for doing these screencasts. I swear, you guys are a godsend. A while back I wanted to start using jQuery, and Jeff started his jQuery For Absolute Beginners screencasts. Then I needed to learn PHP; Jeff started his Diving Into PHP screencast. Now I need to build a website with a CMS; Wordpress seemed like the most promising. Here you are with the Wordpress For Designers screencast. AWESOMENESS!
Sweet… can’t wait for this series to progress.
Keep up the great work, Drew.
Love this awsome screencasts. Is there a possibility to make all of them in swedish? I sure can help and record the new audio.
Please contact med if this sounds interesting!
Thx m8! Keep up the good work
The your voice is very low, I had to turn up all volume to hear you properly. I hope this was a one time thing. But I thank you very much for doing this.
sorry for the grammatical error, I meant your voice is very low. but any who.
Thank you so much
So good, thanks again guys!
“Patty Mayonnaise is so hot”
Love the wallpaper.
Thanks for another great screencast. Looking forward to the rest of the series.
Nice screencast again Douglass!
The one thing I would say is that the audio is quiet at times.
Hopefully, Drew can find a way to increase the gain.
@Nathan – Thank you! I get mad when no one appreciates Drew’s funny jokes.
…Though, shame on him. The Nick version was WAY better than the Disney version.
Hey Drew, I am using laptop speakers and turned the sound on the video and my speakers up all the way and I can barely hear it.
Would you please consider finding a way to raise the sound volume?
Thanks.
AWESOME SERIES! I can’t wait for more. I know it takes alot of work to put these together, so I feel bad asking this, but I’m going to anyway. If there’s anyway you can make these come out more often, like every day(probably pushing it), or every other day, that would be great.
Oh…and your dry sense of humor is hilarious

Unfortunately, until this blog starts generating some revenue, we have to limit them to twice a week.
But with the “Diving into PHP” series, that means that you get a screencast 4 days per week (excluding this one.)
@everyone-Thanks for all very much for your comments, I am working with my new mic so am still getting used to the settings. I will be sure to increase the audio for Day 4
hey Drew love these screencasts and can’t wait for the rest.
p.s love your wallpaper lol
I am enjoying these videos, but I have one request how about adding some links to the page for example how about a link to the WP documentation for template tags. I think that would be far more useful than telling us how to find it in the video.
Just my 2cents worth,
Steve
Oh now I recognize her, she’s that girl from “Doug”.
I used to love that show!
Nice screencast again guys!
@Steve
Thanks for the suggestion, I’ll try to remember to include any links I used in the video so you can just give them a click
Here is the template tag link you mentioned: http://codex.wordpress.org/Template_Tags
nice screencast!
Cover all the basics, fantastic tutorials for beginners
Great vid, learned about tags, which I didn’t knew they existed.
You should use Coda Clips instead of copy/pasting from an old theme.
Peep this: http://coda-clips.com/category/wordpress
Or, just install all of them as a whole: http://wpcandy.com/articles/wordpress-coda-clips-collection.html
Awesome stuff! Looking through all the videos now…
Hey, awesome man!
But can you just put a list at the bottom of the video of all the previous episodes? I think that would be easier to navigate and stuff! * AGAIN JUST A LIL SUGGESTION*
-hassan
Good series but the audio is very very quiet. Can you turn up your microphone volume?
So are there a pre determined set of parameters that you pass to the blog info tags? I don’t get that part
Found out maself.
Here is the info if anyone else was interested in knowing:

Just wanna say thanks a million.
U guys are a great resource for all webdesigners that wanna learn wp.
Again thx a million
Wow – these are wonderful, Doug. Thank you, thank you, thank you…
Wow, cool… That is what I have been looking for. Designing my own Wordpress Theme from scratch. Thank you for the tutorial. I am going to watch the next one soon.
You forgot to tag this post as WordPress.
This is awesome, can’t wait to catch up with all the other vids. (Please do one like this for Drupal!)
Thanks!!
Isn’t it “Patti Mayonnaise”
Man, Doug, those were the days…. Oh, by the way, the screencasts are great, even though I understand PHP and can write themes, I imagine that these are great help to those people who are just starting out
In the style.css file why do you insert a Theme URI and an Author: URI?
Thank you
Great tutorial i started working my own template right now i will go along with screencasts
Great tutorial, wish you could download the vids though!
This is a great set of screencasts! I think it helps to learn how to build a theme from scratch rather than just modify an existing theme. Top job, cheers!
What is that plugin you’re using with firefox to reveal the stylesheet???
Hey, I’d love to follow along with this series but i think day 2 and 3 videos are down as they won’t load, please repost!
Thanks
Ok, scratch that, 3 is working but 2 still isn’t. Knowing my luck its probably something at my end :S
I have to say I love Doug, and I love Doug’s love, Patty.
This series made my life easier. Extremely useful
